Willis Wee met Mr.Crampton at the GMIC in Beijing where he had a short discussion about mobile usage in Asia and Middle-east together with Steven Goh, founder of Mig33.

There were several questions which Willis wanted to ask Thomas at GMIC but unfortunately time didn’t permit him to do so. Instead, he (Willis) sent them via email, Thomas was gracious enough to oblige. His insightful answers are posted below.

Why do you take interest in Asia?

Asia offers amazing opportunities. I have long loved the wide range of cultures and geographies of Asia. I have lived nearly 15 years in Asia, including stints in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Beijing. In terms of digital, Asia has the most interesting and varied social media ecosystems in the world.

Asia’s digital culture is diverse. In general, how can businesses do well in this continent?

Perhaps the most important key to success in Asia is attitude. Do not hold preconceived notions. Go in with the humble understanding that things will likely be turned on their head by the end of the meeting. While working as a journalist in Thailand, I realized that the more I knew about Thai politics, the less I understood it. I have found that true of Asia in general.

Facebook adoption rate in India could overtake Indonesia soon. Do you have any thoughts on this?

The number of people on Facebook in India may be catching up to Indonesia, but the portion of the population on Facebook remains relatively modest in India. In addition to the large number of people joining Facebook in these two countries, they are both positioned to lead the world for innovation in mobile Internet.

Indonesia already has US$20 phones that allow people to access Facebook. This may be due to a shortcoming of infrastructure (the lack of broadband cables laid), but it will push these nations to the forefront of Internet innovation.

Google is reportedly set to buy AdMeld, which sells display advertising for large Websites that Google currently doesn’t have access to in its DoubleClick Ad Exchange program.

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is in the process of purchasing AdMeld, which sells display advertising for large Websites owned by Thomson Reuters and Discovery Communications, and News Corp.’s Fox News and New York Post sites.

Google declined to confirm the buy, which TechCrunch first reported and claimed was worth $400 million.

Google has more or less locked up the market for search ads, where it has 90 percent-plus of text-based ads paired with search results. However, the company’s plot of display ads—graphical ads with glimmer and sparkle that sometimes irk users—is much less.

IDC said Google’s U.S. display ad revenue share grew to 14.7 percent in the first quarter of 2011 from 13.3 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, passing Yahoo for the first time.

Neal Mohan, Google’s vice president of display advertising, said engagement rates across all display ads will increase by 50 percent as “ads become less cluttered, more relevant, more engaging and more attractive.”

Adding AdMeld would help Google grab ad inventory from leading online content publishers for its DoubleClick Ad Exchange marketplace, providing quite a weapon for Google in its battle against Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook and other rivals.

I’ve met a number of businesses that advertise both online and offline and most of the time I ask a simple question, “What return of investment do you receive as a result of your investment?” In most cases I get an answer equivalent to that of a blank stare often it is a blank stare.

I have to shake my head, though usually I want to shake them and scream “Why aren’t you testing!” How much money are you burning by investing on an ad and not even knowing what the returns are? There are many ways to lower your advertising costs, you must put into good practice on how to do it effectively.

After watching client after client throw away hard earned money out the window, I figured it was high time I wrote this article to teach you how to test your ads. Because you will literally be saving thousands while increasing your sales once you do. Lowering your advertising costs will keep you in business alot longer.

Testing your ads successfully involves four essential principals

1. What to test?

All successful ads contain an attention grabbing headline, a compelling body and a call to action. You will need to test each aspect of your ad to know what is and isn’t working. But the web makes it easy to test each at the same time by coding all your ads with a reference code to identify the source of the inquiry. Here’s how you do this.

You write a series of ads and choose the ones you feel will create the greatest response. I like to test two at a time but I’ve known others to split test three ads. Run your ads for a week and tally the results to see which ad generated the greatest response. At this point you have one ad that is effective. But you want to create the best ad you possibly can. So begin refining your ad by changing one element per test. If you change the headline you run and test the ad, if you change the font run and test it again.

2. Where to test

Your ads need to be seen by as many people as possible. AOL, Yahoo and free classified ad spaces are great places to test your ads. They won’t generate a lot of sales but they will help to run a successful test for free.

3. When to test

While many people may argue that certain days of the week are better for placing your classified ads, the truth is you need to test for a full seven days. This way you can test not only your ad copy and where you placed the ad, but see when the ad pulled the best. How will you know what day to run your ad, if you’re only testing for a two or three days?

4. Tracking your results

Testing is useless, unless you track your results. This is where a unique code comes in. You can add a “? and number” to your URL and you can track ads for free by using your server logs. For example, if you changed your URL from www.sales.com to www.sale.com/?123 you will go to the same page, but your server logs will show how many hits went to the ?123 site separately from the main page. Another tip that many people rarely use is to ask prospects how they found you. All it takes is a simple “Where did hear about us?” This is especially important if you partake in offline advertising.

Enter the results into your computer using spreadsheet. You can also write it down by creating an ad chart. On top of the chart, give each ad a number, list the location and duration of the ad and allow room for daily results. Remember, it’s best to use a separate email address or URL for each ad.

Now that you have your data you can figure out the costs per click. To do this simply divide the amount you spent by the number of clicks. For example, let’s say you advertise in an ezine that charges $45 for an ad. If you get 1000 clicks from that ad, your cost per click is:

$45 divided by 1000 = 4.5 cents per click.

Whether the cost per click is good or bad depends on your product, how well your sales material works and your profit margins.

Knowledge is power

So unless you want to be like John Wannamaker, the ‘father of the modern department store’ who once said “I know that half of my advertising is wasted, I just don’t know which half it is” then grab the bull by the horns and start measuring the results of every ad you run from this moment on to lower your advertising costs.

Jeff Casmer is an internet marketing consultant and work at home business owner. For more information on earning money with ezines please visit his “Top Ranked” Earn Money with Ezines Directory which gives you all the information you need to Work From Home in the 21st century.

Often witty, and of course crisp, concise, and direct, we are surrounded by the famous advertising slogans that have become, as some would put it, an insidious part of our lives. From the endearing image created by ‘His Master’s Voice’ of HMV (RCA Victor) to the succinct ‘Just Do It’ of Nike, advertising slogans are memorable phrases that don’t merely bring to mind some impersonal corporate house doing hard business, but are meant to create warm, positive feelings and images. Often, they evolve into creating a distinctive life of their own, make the audience – you and me – feel good and want to own what the slogan/ad wants us to buy. Creativity, brevity, simplicity, and longevity – these are the catchwords that can define the famous advertising slogans listed below.

Advertising is making known; calling public attention to a product, service, or company by means of paid announcements so as to affect perception or arouse consumer desire to make a purchase or take a particular action.

Advertising is the no personal communication of information usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through the various media.”

“The best ads are written from the heart. Write down the good ideas and the wild ideas. Don’t try to edit your ideas at the start. Don’t put a brake on your imagination.” – John Caples

In very interesting definition of a Gerry Miller: – Advertising is defining an interesting story.
E.g. “The cat sat on the mat” is not a story. “The cat sat on the dog’s mat.”

Writing an ad is an art. There is an importance of creating ad concept and using words while writing an effective copy of ad. Here is a small effort to understand effective ad writing.

Copywriting and Advertising

Karon Thackston says that no matter how ever beautiful the ads are, no matter how ever effective the words are- the only thing that matters is display of the ad. The beauty of the ad gets elevated and appreciated only when it has proper copywriting.

The copy of any ad is the salesman. Good copy creates a desire to bye and closes the sale. Once you have found a winning sales idea, don’t change it. Your client may tire of it after a year or two. He sees all the ads from layout stage to proof stage to publication stage. Explain to him that when he is tired of the campaign, it it just beginning to take hold of the public.

There are some different rules to developing copy like you frequently mention the brand name and key consumer benefit: and to conclude the ad by linking back to its beginning, with a strong call to some kind of action. While second rule for developing copy is to keep the format simple, uncluttered, and straightforward.

Whenever you write a copy your aim should be only your customer not your product. If your copy appeals to emotions and solves problems. One good copy is the answer of the customer’s question that what is there in it for customer?

Elements Of A Good Ad

Writing ad is an art. Writing an ad is based on AIDA theory. Get Attention. Make it interesting. Let it produces desire in reader’s mind. Influence reader to take an action.

Attention
In the clamor and clutter of sight and sound, and the competition for the reader’s eye, ear, and heart, it’s imperative that you compete successfully for attention. There should be some element in the ad — whether it’s the headline or the illustration or the layout — that attracts the eye or ear and arouses sufficient interest to warrant attention to the message. And the copy itself must sustain that attention.

Interest
Once you’ve captured the reader’s attention you’ve got to say or show something to sustain interest, or the message will not be heard.

Desire
The ad must generate a desire to accept what you have to say about what you have to offer; to want to do business with you.

Action
The ultimate aim of an ad is to generate action on the part of the reader or listener; to cause the reader to want to do something that you want him or her to do, such as buy your service, or, in the case of professional services marketing, it might be to either generate an inquiry or accept a selling situation. On the other hand, just getting a reader to think about you in a specific way is an action, too. That’s what institutional advertising is about.

Other things to be covered in Advertisement!!

Promise of Benefit
Something in the ad should promise the reader or the listener some benefit that will accrue from accepting the ad’s premises.

Credibility.
The premises of the ad must be believable.

Persuasiveness.
The ad should be persuasive.
It should sell or generate the need for the service you offer, and project your service as superior.

Steps outlines for creating ad concept

1. Believe in your personal experience. Put yourself as a customer.
2. Learn from the experience of others
3. Write from your heart
4. Talk with the manufacturer / producer
5. Study the product
6. Review previous advertising
7. Study your competitor’s ads
8. Study testimonials from customers
9. Solve the problem
10. Your mind work
11. Successful idea

Outlines for writing ad effectively

1. Know your objectives.
2. Identify with their problem or need.
3. More you tell, the more you sell.
4. Measure promotional efforts
5. Be more specific
6. Write short sentences, with easy and familiar words
7. Make sure each word is exactly the right one to convey your meaning.
8. Write headline keeping reader’s interest in mind
9. Define solution and hint to reader
10. Explain the solution for the problem
11. Show the proof by specific results, testimonials and a guarantee.
12. Explain how are you different than your competitors
13. Offer free information. E.g. information packs or catalogue
14. Make title interesting
15. Put reader in hurry by offers ending date.
16. Ad should be readable and noticeable so put your logo and text clearly
17. Highlight your website, email and toll free numbers
18. Use a coupon or response device
19. Use a dashed or cut along the dotted line border on an ad
20. Use Serif or Arial in layout, as such fonts are easy to read
21. Use the present tense and the active voice

Advertising copy is successful when concept and words are matched in correct format on paper. Even color management in an ad depends on what concept or message you want to convey. Highlighting key words are necessary in ad like classifieds.

Using one full page with one word attracts more attention if word is so powerful. Sometimes ad conveys a detailed message and information too. In such case writing thousands words are necessary. There are many theories and concepts written to write good ad.

Still I believe in only one thing while creating an advertisement. – Be creative as much as you can.
Advertising is not bound by any rules but selling is precondition.

Have you considered offline advertising for your internet business? Surprisingly very few people do think through this concept, and yet it can prove to be one of the most successful ways of increasing your business revenue. Certainly, it is important to promote your business online; using keyword placement, search engine optimization, reciprocal links, pay-per-click advertising and other such methods, but sometimes one of the quickest and most effective ways of promoting your business is waiting on your doorstep.

One of the reasons why many people don’t consider offline advertising is that they can’t think of any successful methods which can be used that don’t cost an arm and a leg. Television adverts, radio and billboard adverts cost a fortune and it is generally only those businesses which are already huge that can afford to run such promotions.

However, with a little bit of imagination you can easily create a significant boost for your online business, at very little cost. It might take up some of your time, but for a day’s work advertising your website, you could see yourself making significantly more money over the next few weeks and months. Everyone can do with a bit of a boost at the moment and a successful offline advertising campaign could be exactly what your website business needs.

The exact nature of the offline promotion you undertake will depend largely on the amount of money you have to spend, as well as the amount of time you have available. The quickest and cheapest option is to print off a few thousand flyers and distribute these. If you create a flyer on the computer, make sure it looks smart and professional, grabs attention, and makes a good point, as well as providing the necessary contact information.

Don’t limit yourself to just the website address – some people might be interested but not have access to a computer, so including a phone number can be helpful. If you don’t want to give out your home number, why not pick up a cheap cell phone and use that?

As far as distributing these flyers is concerned, why not visit the local parking facility at the nearest shopping mall or superstore? Tucking these flyers under the windscreen wipers of a few hundred cars won’t take long. Admittedly, you know the success rate won’t be high, but you aren’t trying to attract everyone – just enough to make a difference. Let’s say that there are 1,000 cars parked that day in a number of car parks – what sort of return would you like?

Being honest, one return is likely to be a customer you wouldn’t have had previously, and it may well prove to be a returning customer in the future, or someone who promotes your business for you through word of mouth. However, in reality you could find yourself with between a 1%-5% success rate. That’s between 10 and 50 extra customers, just for a morning’s work.

Another option to consider is placing an advert in the local paper. Often there are freely distributed advertising papers, which will charge you a small listing fee, and other papers will allow you to list an advert for free. Even a small advertisement can prove to be successful however, and as most local papers reach tens of thousands of potential customers. A good advert can easily reap a massive response. Ideally, such an advert should be placed every week for several weeks. The small regular advert which people see often and recognise can often prove far more effective than a one off larger one.

In some cases, you may find that the service you offer through your website might complement an existing service or product provider. Perhaps you offer a computer repair service – and a store nearby is selling computers. Do they offer a repair service? If not, it would be advisable to have a chat with them, and work out an arrangement whereby both parties can benefit. They could provide details of your repair service to every customer who buys a computer – perhaps attaching a sticker with the details on to every computer sold.

This gives them the added benefit of being able to offer an after sales repair service at no cost to them, and creates an offline advertising medium for you. This is of course one specific example, but with a little imagination there are often ways in which your business can be tailored to offer a solution to an existing store or facility. Providing a stack of leaflets of business cards to these stores for them to distribute to customers can prove to be highly successful.

Offline advertising simply requires a little bit of imagination and thought – and this is the single biggest reason why so many internet businesses don’t do it. However, if you want your business to succeed and grow, then considering ways of promoting your business in the real world can often reward you with real new customers, and improved sales figures.

Objectives To assess the effects of tobacco advertising and promotion on nonsmoking adolescents’ future smoking behaviour.

Authors’ conclusions Longitudinal studies consistently suggest that exposure to tobacco advertising and promotion is associated with the likelihood that adolescents will start to smoke. There are no trials of the impact of tobacco advertising and promotional activities on people taking up smoking. The Act bans advertising and promotion (including sponsorship) of tobacco products, with certain limited exceptions.

The treaty obliges Party States to undertake a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, as far as their constitutions permit. Internal tobacco company documents confirm that young people are a primary target of advertising and promotional campaigns .

The Association has repeatedly urged the Government to legislate for a comprehensive ban on all forms of tobacco advertising and promotion. These data add up to a strong circumstantial case that tobacco industry advertising and promotional activity encourages adolescents to smoke. This decline was associated with an almost exponential increase in tobacco industry expenditure on advertising and promotion of cigarettes.

There is considerable evidence that tobacco industry advertising and promotion are one of the major influences on the uptake of smoking by the young. The settlements bar the use of cartoons in advertising, promotion, packaging or labeling of tobacco products.

A new form of Internet advertising has exploded and it is receiving a lot of response lately – pixel advertising. Essentially, it is where people purchase a set of pixels on the homepage of a Web site, inserting their company logo that links back to their own site. Potentially, the end result can be increased Web site traffic to both the pixel site and the advertisers placing their images there.

As a potential advertiser seeking unique online exposure and increased traffic for your Web site, use precautions before spending your money on just any pixel advertising Web site.

Don’t be impulsive with your advertising dollars. Do some comparison shopping online first. Take a few moments to browse different pixel sites, read the content on their sites about their company and what makes them unique among other pixel ad sites. Compare their pricing, the sizes of pixel ads available, the placement of your ad on their homepage, and the length of time your ad will be placed on their Web site.

Choose pixel advertising sites devoted to a charitable or worth while cause…Alex Tew, a UK college student, started MillionDollarHomepage.com (the first known pixel advertising site) so he could save enough money to go to college. There are others like him out there whose primary goal is to use pixel advertising as a way to donate to a charity or help others who are less fortunate. Sites like BannerCanvas.com by owner Chad King were started to raise money to help tear down his mother’s old dilapidated trailer and build her a brand new house on the same property. These sites are definitely worth checking out first.

Seek out pixel ad sites whose owners already believe in natural search engine optimization, and are paying an SEO company for natural and ethical search engine optimization. How can you tell without directly asking? While it may not be the best indicator, one method is to look for keywords in the META titles, META descriptions and META keyword tags on many pages of the Web site. Look for those same keywords throughout the content on the site.

Find pixel advertising sites who will genuinely keep its word on leaving your ad on their Web site for the 5 or 10 years as promised. Many of these new pixel sites popping up everywhere will no longer be around one year from now, because they will have taken everybody’s money and stopped paying for their domain and hosting fees. You do not want to advertise on a fly-by-night-take-your-money-and-run type of pixel site.

Before paying for a pixel advertising site, actually contact the owner of the pixel ad site by phone or email and get to know him or her. Ask that person questions like what he intends to do with the money generated from pixel advertising, or what percentage (if any) will be donated to charity. What charity will the money be donated to, or what individual or family will be the recipient of the donations?

Pixel advertising is fast becoming the latest online trend. As a potential advertiser, first take the time to shop around before choosing which pixel advertising site to pay for, and find out who will profit from your advertising dollars.
